John Byrne Fires Up the F.F. Again

The Fantastic Four used to proclaim themselves "The World's Greatest Comic Mag(azine)" Well under Byrne's helm it could rightfully be said so.

The trick of revitatalizing a franchise is to know what to take, what to emulate, what to improve upon and what to leave behind. Byrne is going full steam ahead.

Byrne builds on the characters without forgetting their roots. He touches on the great FF epics while telling new stories. It looks like a combo of Stan and Jack with a litle Larry Niven style science fiction thrown in.

The book starts out with a trip into the Negative Zone. Along the way they encounter many a science fiction twist while all the time trouble is brewing in the Baxter Building that brings in no less than the Avengers (another series Byrne worked on).

This book includes the famous "widescreen" version that had to be read sideways (but alas the free tattoo inserts are not reprinted).

With Annihilus and Galactus as villians and a case that leads right back to the second fantastic four adventure way back in F.F. #2 how could you go wrong??

Early experiments

3-1/2 stars. I consider volumes 3, 6 & 7 in this series to be about average to slightly above average in quality. If the 2nd paperback was a solid step forward in figure drawing, this 3rd edition almost seems like 2 steps back? What happened?...

The end of the 2nd edition gives us Byrne's famous issue #249, to this day some of the best artwork he's ever produced. You'd think he would continue on to bigger & better things. Instead, Byrne gets highly experimental in both story and art here, perhaps as a reaction to seemingly reaching his artistic zenith. This isn't a bad collection of experiments; it's just that my expectations for this volume were for something so much better.

Included in this 3rd volume: about 5 issues dealing with the Negative Zone, Franklin & Annihilus, one having a sideways layout for the art; Daredevil & Avengers as brief guest stars dealing with Annihilus; a Thing solo story; a Galactus, Nova & Skrulls conflict; and a FF Annual with pencils & colors only (no inks).

The experimental nature of this edition is obvious. That sideways issue and the annual with no inks are both out of the ordinary. Byrne's inks too take on a new direction: being now a little more loose & unrefined, a bit like Frank Miller's eighties Marvel work. The Negative Zone story arc has an early Sci-Fi/ Star Trek feel to it. It's not that any of this stuff is really all that bad. It's just that I consider the other volumes in Byrne's run to be that much better.

Reproduction values not entirely up to par...

The stories and artwork in this volume are classic, but I find it disappointing that a substantial chunk of the book suffers from poor, muddy reproduction of the linework. This is not a minor point since (1) Byrne's artwork is detailed, and easily suffers from dropouts and blotchiness if it isn't reproduced carefully and (2) the original publication dates of these comics wasn't so long ago that there isn't any reason not to put out a top quality job. Fortunately, only a portion of the reprints in this edition suffer from this problem, and the other volumes in this series have crisp reproduction throughout (as of this writing, Volume 5 is the most recent volume to be published).

About the Author
Sara J. Kadolph, PhD, ACS, AATCC, ITAA, is Professor Emeritus of Textiles and Clothing at Iowa State University where she taught textile science, textile conservation, and textile quality assurance. She is a member of the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA), American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC), and American Chemical Society (ACS). Her studies have been published in the Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, Journal of the Society of International Natural Dyeing, and the Journal of Consumer Education, among others. Her research interests include natural dyes and textile quality assurance. In 2003, she became a Wakonse Fellow and was awarded the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Agricultural Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award.

Everything you need is in this book. From testing methods, to fiber types and composure, and seam types. A great manual to keep because it informs you about procedures and practices as well as how to execute them. I did buy this textbook for a class not for personal use.

Author Sara J. Kadolph, deserves a pat on her back, for Authoring this book.
I like the way she has prsented the whole subject.
The Logical sequence she has followed in appointing the various topics.
The coverage of various topics is excellent.
Being a Teacher of Textile Quality Assurance in India, I am definitely finding the book extremely useful is preparing my Lectures.
I would say its a must buy for any one involved in Textile Quality Assurance.

First, it explains the origins and evolution of the law of the sea, with a particular focus upon the role of key publicists such as Hugo Grotius and John Selden, the gradual development of state practice, and the creation of the 1982 UN Convention. It then reviews the components which comprise the maritime domain, assessing their definition, assertion, and recognition. It also analyses the ways in which coastal states or the international community can assert control over areas of the sea, and the management and regulation of each of the maritime zones. This includes investigating the development of the mechanisms for maritime boundary delimitation, and the decisions of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. The Handbook also discusses the actors and intuitions that impact on the law of the sea, considering their particular rights and interests, in particular those of state actors and the principle law of the sea institutions. Then it focuses on operational issues, investigating longstanding matters of resource management and the integrated oceans framework. This includes a discussion and assessment of the broad and increasingly influential integrated oceans management governance framework that interacts with the traditional law of the sea. It considers six distinctive regions that have been pivotal to the development of the law of the sea, before finally providing a detailed analysis of the critical contemporary issues facing the law of the sea. These include threatened species, climate change, bioprospecting, and piracy. The Handbook will be an invaluable and thought-provoking resource for scholars, students, and practitioners of the law of the sea.

Donald R. Rothwell is Professor of International Law at the ANU College of Law, Australian National University, Australia where he has taught since 2006, and was previously Challis Professor of International Law at the University of Sydney (2004-2006). His research areas include the law of the sea, the law of the polar regions, international security law, and international law in Australia. He is author, co-author and editor of 16 books.

Alex G. Oude Elferink is Deputy Director of the Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea at the School of Law, Utrecht University, The Netherlands. His research interests include the law of the sea, the law of the polar regions, and the relationship between international law and international relations.

Karen N. Scott is a Professor of Law at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. Her research interests include Antarctic law and policy, the law of the sea and international environmental law. She is the editor of the New Zealand Yearbook of International Law and a member of the Advisory Board to Gateway Antarctica at the University of Canterbury.

Tim Stephens is Professor of International Law and Australian Research Council Future Fellow at the Sydney Law School, University of Sydney, Australia. He is President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law.

A useful life tool

I'm not a writer / editor or paid to 'be creative' with my communication; regardless, this book can be used by anyone that:
* uses written communication,
* has customers (remember your colleagues are customers, too) and
* wants to improve how they communicate (I find what I've learnt 'slipping' into how I think and communicate orally, too)

The book is great because it:
* focuses on the psychology for BS use in communication,
* provides practical techniques to remedy our issues and
* can be used to critically evaluate what you and others produce

For practise, I reviewed and edited my CEO's last email (about a service review), using what I'd learnt in the book and it was revelatory, I saw flaws in:

*starting boldly,
*tone,
*key facts and
*word count

I'd not have known to look for prior to reading this book.

While its title might put some off, this book is one of the most practical and useful guides to clear writing I've ever seen. Mr. Benoff deconstructs bad writing and tells you why it is bad. As a leader of project managers, I believe this is even more important to understand and put into practice because much of our writing is directed to our customers as the reader.

Awesome content - Terribly ported into Kindle Format

Though the content of this book has been phenomenal, the Kindle Port of it is TERRIBLE. The table of contents is only chapter level, which is highly disappointing. The book has NOT been optimised to be read electronically. Sadly, this is one of the best books on IS Strategy and Governance and I love the Governance Design Framework and most other content taught in the book....

Good with Academic Slant

A recent Dilbert cartoon had Dogbert telling management, "You need a dashboard full of information that you can ignore to make decisions in light of corporate politics" and I was reminded of this book.

Essentially, the authors outline numerous excellent examples of governance strategies and archetypes to put into place.

However, there are three caveats that come with this book and its recommendations:

1. If you are with a small to mid-sized company, it will take significant work on your part to adapt these practices to a company of less than 250 employees. The larger your company, the more of the author's advice you can put into play...assuming you have the capability and are not hindered by corporate politics and organizational fiefdoms - and thus my association with Dilbert's cynicism.

2. The diagram on page 109 [hardcover] of the governance structures gone bad (i.e. what the strategies look like in companies that have adopted the talk, but not walked the walk) needed a section or a chapter devoted to suggestions on how to avoid...or at least mitigate the risk of...those undesirable behaviors.

3. The writing style is noticeably academic in its tone and, as a result, some of its recommendations come off as being "pat answers"; compare with books like FROM BUSINESS STRATEGY TO IT ACTION and other strategy-level studies.

That said, for any consultant dealing with regulatory compliance, IT or organizational structures, the book belongs on your shelf as a resource to draw from. For a C-level executive or governance board director, consider reviewing this book and using its best practices as long-term targets.

For ICT historians

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the content of this book, or the writing style, and I'm sure it was a five star book when it first came out. Now it has been overtaken by COBIT, which to an extent has developed to incorporate the ideas here. That makes this book of key historical interest in the history of ICT, but of limited practical value.

Into strength training? Look no further . . .

This is the best workout log I have come across. It doesn't have alot of extra fluff in it about nutrition and excercise examples/photos -- it is just your basic workout log. If you are a serious fitness enthusiast and regularly do strength training and cardio, you already know how to do the exercises and don't need that extra stuff contained in other journals that I've seen. You will not be disappointed with this workout log if you are serious about your excercise.

Best, easiest to use workout log

The book is well made. The plastic cover is durable (dripping sweat wipes off with no harm done), the spiral binding lets the pages fold all the way around flat and is sturdy, and the pages are good stock and a nice bright white. The page layout is simple yet flexible, and can accommodate many different approaches to weight training. 15 lines of strength exercises per page, with weight/reps columns for 6 sets per exercise. Date/time/aerobics tracked at the top of the page, and room for comments at the bottom. You can store a pen in the spiral binding, and there's plenty of room to write whatever you need in the appropriate spaces on the page. There are also pages to record your current measurements and physical status, and to establish goals. And the book is not cluttered with all sorts of nonsense found in most others of this type that you simply don't need in a workout log (exercise instruction, sample routines, photos of steroid-infused professional bodybuilders, etc.). I have ordered every single workout log book that Amazon.com sells, and this is the only one I kept.

Best workout log I've seen yet.

If you're serious about going to the gym and getting in shape then The Workout Log by Joe Oliver & Kel Gleason is an essential tool to keep you motivated and on track. The book is durable and spiral bound and can take the abuse of being in your gym bag. There are 180 pages where you can enter in up to 15 different exercises with subdivisions of reps/weight used for up to six sets. This is perfect for the novice or the advanced gym enthusiast. Also on the top of the page there is space for recording your aerobic activity, time and level. Finally there is a small section on the bottom for comments. The bottom line is that this book is simple, durable, and keeps you focused. What the book does not do is get you're lazy butt in the gym....you need to do that on your own. :-)

A Must Read

Wasn't sure what to expect but I ended up liking the choose-your-own-adventure format in this setting. It felt that the outcome of various choices were actually pretty unpredictable--it was hard to "game" the choices to get to a happy ending, and that made it more interesting. The writing is funny and light and the characters were well-drawn. It's an easy fun read. I wanted some of the story threads to be longer.

Fun choose your own adventure, emphasis on adventure!

MAYBE TONIGHT is such a fun ride--it combines the choose-your-own-adventure format I loved as an elementary schooler with the high social stakes and somewhat (delightfully) exaggerated Young Adult tropes of a Pretty Little Liars novel.

I would say this is no tale for prudes, but that's not quite right--there ARE good, responsible options you can pick if getting involved in the dangerous world of high school drinking and drugs, playing hooky, and taking sexual risks is not your style. However, even the most straight-laced person might enjoy re-reading this book and taking the riskier options, just for the thrill of taking part in a totally different world. One of my favorite aspects of this read was that it's actually multiple books in one, and it's fast-paced enough that the average reader could easily re-read the book a few times, testing out all the different twists and turns available.

Very highly recommended for anyone who ever loved a choose-your-own adventure as a kid and now needs some older fare.
