From Kirkus Reviews
Four quintessential Vance adventures--(1968-75) City of the Chasch, Servants of the Wankh, The Dirdir, and The Pnume--now issued for the first time in a single volume and for the first time in hardcover. The splendid setting is Tschai, the single planet of a dim brown sun, where marooned Earthman Adam Reith encounters four brilliantly realized alien races (per the titles) and a teeming, often deadly flora and fauna in his efforts to survive and eventually return home. Exotic adventure, dastardly villains, beautiful women, baroque landscapes, all served up with the inimitable, incomparable Vance style and wit: dazzlingly inventive, utterly delightful, and absolutely, unequivocally essential to any collection or library (not to mention terrific value for the money). -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. About the Author
Jack Vance, born John Holbrook Vance in 1916, was one of the greatest masters of fantasy and science fiction. He was the winner of many awards for his work and career: the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement. Among his awards for particular works were the Hugo award in 1963 for "The Dragon Masters", in 1967 for "The Last Castle", and in 2010 for his memoir "This is Me, Jack Vance!" He won a Nebula Award in 1966 for "The Last Castle". He won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1990 for "Lyonesse: Madouc". He also won an Edgar for the best first mystery novel in 1961 for "The Man in the Cage." Vance published more than 60 books in his career, sometimes under pseudonyms. Among them were 11 mystery novels, three of them as Ellery Queen. He wrote some of the first, and perhaps best, examples of "planetary adventures," including a novel called" Big Planet". His Dying Earth series were among the most influential fantasy novels ever written, inspiring both generations of writers, and the creators of Dungeons and Dragons.
Vance s series from Tor include "The Demon Princes", "The Cadwal Chronicles", "The Dying Earth", "The Planet of Adventure", and "Alastor". Vance s last novels were a series of two: "Ports of Call" and "Lurulu."
Jack Vance was a sailor, a writer, an adventurer, a music critic, and a raconteur. He died in May 2013.

Visit Tschai for only a handful of sequins...
By D. Allen Schaeffer
Straight-up Planetary Romance by the guy who pretty much invented it. The four novels herein comprise one of Jack's most solid efforts. Swashbuckling adventure with just enough depth the round out the flavor, the Planet of Adventure novels (THE CITY OF THE CHASCH, THE SERVANTS OF THE WANK, THE DIRDIR, THE PNUME) detail the adventure of marooned Adam Reith as he tries to return to Earth. Four alien races inhabit Tschai, only one native, and all dominate the various breeds of human also present. Reith is something of a philosophical problems for his fellow humans, however; his existence refutes the religious and cultural dogma of many of the humans he encounters.

Vance does some of his best work in POA creating convincingly alien aliens. The Dirdir and Pnume, particularly, will stay with you. If you want something more modern and mature than the Barsoom novels of Burroughs, Tschai is the planet for you.

How has this never been a TV series? Or on the big screen?!

One Man against a World.
By Stephen Grant
Vance's best work. There are portions of commentary that startle the reader with their application to real life.
For example, "I never dispute other people's opinions of myself" said Reith.
Dordolio was a man Reith found impossible to take seriously.
An incense stick fell to the floor where it began to smolder. Reith picked it up and replaced it on the tray. "Why do you do that"? asked Helsse in sardonic wonder. "You must supply your own answer", answered Reith.
There are many similar gems, including exquisite, longer exchanges between man and aliens that spotlight the inherent cultural differences between two species. Vance has a wonderful skill at presenting to the reader such matters with detail, and even humor.

Excellent
By ArtFan
Planet of Adventure is a series of four novels: City of the Chasch, Servants of the Wankh, The Dirdir, and the Pnume. Each one of these names refers to one of the alien races residing on the planet. This series is my most recent reading of Vance - I have read probably about 20 Vance novels altogether so far - and it is an outstanding series. Although not quite as rich and fulfilling as my favorite series - the Cadwal Trilogy - it comes close. There is a hero and his two companions - all three are honest, loyal, and morally upright .... in a landscape of characters, both alien and human, consisting of scoundrels, cheats, or flat out evil individuals: everyone looking out for their own interests. Not only is an interesting plot, but Vance always creates imagery: certain images from this series of books will stick in my mind for a long time to come: the 10-foot tall stranger creature the Phude lurking around in its cloak and hat, playing tricks on unattentive characters, or worse, dismembering them. Like with a lot of Vance, these books are not for the faint-hearted - there is a substantial amount of blood and gore, or disturbing images. But that's one of the things that makes Vance, Vance. The only thing I don't like is the title of the series: "Planet of Adventure" is a childish title which makes it seem like we're dealing with simple pulp science fiction, which is far from the case. Better would have been a more thoughtful title that reflects the true nature of the series. If my book reviews were for sci-fi only, I would give this series five stars.

Francis Gary and Lee Harvey
By CamdenNJReader
When Powers wrote this he was still in apology mode. I certainly don't think he had anything to be sorry about. He got shot out of the sky by a Russian missile and did hard time in a Soviet max joint. Would anyone of us handled it better than he did. Here is the big issue he doesn't really confront. Lee Harvey Oswald knew the exact altitude of the U2 flights and the CIA knew Oswald had defected to Russia in 1959. Yet in 1960 the agency decided to send Powers on a full border to border overflight. The first one ever! Either they knew Oswald was on our side the whole time or ...... they wanted to make sure Powers got shot down. Which was it.

The Third Point
By Gabriel Toscana Videgaray
With respect to the "Cold War" we usually know the official versions from both the government of the USA and of the USSR. Powers book is extremely interesting because it gives you a private account of somebody that was deeply involved in the U-2 Cold War incident: a third point of view. A point of view that has no "agenda" to push through.
Powers description of his life in prison had for me an almost spiritual meaning. After reading what he went through, I felt grateful for what I have. He mentions, for example, that in prison work is cherished: he and his cell mate fought to have the privilege of cleaning their cell.
On the other hand, his actual experience in jail was very different from what you see in the movies. There was no violence, no torture, no conspiracy to escape. In almost two years he had a chance to speak with only one other prisoner: his cell mate. It was the most boring experience imaginable, so much so that some prisoners lost their minds.
It is difficult not to feel contempt for Dwight Eisenhower who after ordering the flight completely abandoned Powers to his fate. Eisenhower cared much more for his "prestige" than for any person but in the end his prestige went down the drain anyway when his involvement in the U-2 affair was finally known.
Another player that has dramatically dropped in stature for me is Robert Kennedy. His callousness is hard to believe. After all the suffering Powers went through in the USSR for doing his duty for the CIA, R. Kennedy was willing to try him for treason with the only purpose of advancing his political career! The politics surrounding this event are sickening: JFK had invited Powers to meet him at the White House but at the last moment the offer was withdrawn.
In the end, no president or high level politician did anything to obtain Powers'release from the USSR. It was his father whom he had to thank for his release.
Obviously, the CIA did not want this book to be published and 8 years had to pass before it finally saw the light.
I fully recommend the book as it gives you an insight as to how history is really made by real people, in real places, performing real duties.

Operation Overflight: A Memoir of the U-2 Incident
By Fencecheck
This book is certainly a must have for the Cold War, Military Aviation and Spy afficionados out there! While the authors did their best to make the most of what little details Powers did/could provide them - especially about the actual missions he flew for the CIA - they failed to do justice to the historical significance of the event. Powers' actual flights and missions in the U-2 are not discussed in great detail (they never even mention the plane's actual altitude, there are no details about the U-2 except for some hearsay info on its imagined structural integrity (or lack thereof), and they assigned less than a page to discuss the other "special missions"), and there are very few details about the mission the book was actually written about. What you will nevertheless be able to read in detail about are his time spent in Russian prisons, the KGB interrogations, or his kind Latvian roomate Zigurd in Vladimir prison. The final section of the book is spent on the well-justified trashing of the CIA (afterall they gave him the shaft the same way NASA did to the Apollo 13 crew), and Powers provides some great insights into the personal dealings of the Agency. Reading it today, Powers' observations were way ahead of their time! You'll appreciate Powers Jr's epilogue that puts the entire book in perspective. Overall it is a great book, the only first-hand account of the U-2 incident you'll ever have, and as a matter of fact, I'll go and read it again!

An absolutely delightful guide to a magnificent sport.
By Quiet Wanderer
This book is a fantastic introduction to the sport of Falconry. While it is by no means an exhaustive guidebook, it presents a clear path for those that wish to learn more about the sport. It emphasizes more than once, that falconry is not a sport that you can just pick up and put down, it is for serious hunters and bird lovers only.

Beautiful photography and colorful writing bring this short but fun book to life. I had a great time reading it and would recommend it to anyone who wishes to learn more about Falconry.

The Complete Far Side, by Gary Larson

The Far Side® is back in this much-anticipated three-volume slipcased paperback edition of The Complete Far Side!

“Every one of these cartoons is just something that drifted into my head when I was alone with my thoughts. And, for better or worse, I ‘jotted’ them down. It was only later, when perhaps I received an angry letter from someone, that it struck me: Hey! Someone’s been reading my diary!” --Gary Larson, from the preface to The Complete Far Side

Originally published in hardcover in 2003, The Complete Far Side was a New York Times bestseller. Now it’s back as a paperback set with a newly designed slipcase that will delight Far Side fans.

Revered by its fans as the funniest, most original, most “What the ... ?”-inspiring cartoon ever, The Far Side® debuted in January 1980 and enjoyed an illustrious 14 years on the world’s comics pages until Gary Larson’s retirement in 1994. The Complete Far Side celebrates Larson’s twisted, irreverent genius in this ultimate Far Side book.

A masterpiece of comic brilliance, The Complete Far Side contains every Far Side cartoon ever syndicated--over 4,000 if you must know--presented in (more or less) chronological order by year of publication, with more than 1,100 that had never before appeared in a book. Also included are additional Far Side cartoons Larson created after his retirement: 13 that appeared in the last Far Side book, Last Chapter and Worse, and six cartoons that periodically ran as a special feature in the New York Times Science Times section as The Far Side® of Science. Creator Gary Larson offers a rare glimpse into the mind of The Far Side® in quirky and thoughtful introductions to each of the 14 chapters. Complaint letters, fan letters, and queries from puzzled readers appear alongside some of the more provocative or elusive panels. Actor, author, and comedian Steve Martin offers his sagacious thoughts in a foreword, and Larson’s former editor describes what it was like to be “the guy who could explain every Far Side cartoon.”

During its 14-year run, The Far Side® was syndicated internationally to over 1,900 daily newspapers. It spawned 23 books and has been translated into 17 different languages.

Amazon.com Review
Gary Larson calls The Complete Far Side, the massive two-volume collection of his Far Side cartoons, an "18-pound hernia giver." Sure to give any coffee table a solid workout, the handsome and heavy 1,272-page "legacy book" is a must for fervent fans; over 4,300 single-panel comics with more than half in color and 1,100 that have not appeared in any book form before (the popular--and far less weighty--paperback collections).

Set in rough chronological order, the comics share pages with occasional letters from fans, detractors, editors, folks made famous by a particular cartoon, and those begging for explanations. Though few explanations are provided (Larson personally supplies merely one, plus a single apology), this collection helps answer the inevitable "how do you think up these things" conundrum. Before each year's cartoons, Larson provides insight with essays about his childhood, various travels, occupational hazards, and his official rules for dealing with bedtime monsters (which often turned out to be his older brother). Most wonderful is the first essay on how the comic started. (His longtime editor Jake Morrissey's long introduction is a must read on The Far Side's story).

Despite no central characters, it's easy to spot patterns in Larson's wild and wacky cartoons. Animals, insects, and inanimate objects often exhibit all-too-human impulses. Larson's subjects are often in scenes of peril--disasters, visits to hell, and perhaps a hundred cartoons set on a one-palm tree deserted island. It is what Larson's fertile imagination mined from those situations that created fans and enemies for 14 years. (Larson retired at his peak and then went into jazz music). The comics are not indexed (how could they be--first lines? listings of cartoons with cows?); finding a favorite requires a great memory for its publication date. Best simply to peruse the pages of this beautiful collection in which you will certainly find more than a few new chuckles before landing on your beloved Larson sketch. --Doug Thomas

From Publishers Weekly
Lumpy cows and dinosaurs, nerds wearing glasses and women with big hair abound in this hefty two-volume slipcased compilation of Larson's twisted and beloved single-panel comic. Complete with every syndicated Far Side cartoon arranged chronologically by year of publication, in addition to 19 that were created after Larson's retirement in 1995, this deluxe set features chapter introductions by Larson as well as letters from fans and puzzled readers ("Help!... [This comic] has stumped not only me but the entire office"). Readers will be amused by the insightfully funny and nostalgic chapter introductions that offer a peek into the cartoon genius's mind, such as the intro to 1982 that illustrates what Larson calls the "ohpleaseohplease syndrome" an obsession he shares with biologists and naturalists (and his brother) to acquire a lizard or another creature, if only briefly, and to "drink it in" before it escapes into its own world. Comedian/author Martin provides a foreword that captures the offbeat and candid humor underlying each comic, as he sorrowfully reports that "many of the scenes depicted in this book are actually false." Readers may not be stunned by this revelation, but they will surely enjoy flipping through the slick, full-colored pages of this mammoth treasury, a lavish (and heavy!) collector's item that is the perfect gift for Far Side fans. Just make sure they say "ohpleaseohplease."

Fantastic Collection from a Genius
By CyanSkies
The entire Gary Larson collection! This was a great gift for myself. I say this collection is ALMOST perfect. The books are softcover. Wish they were hardcover but I'm willing to let that slide. The one thing that did bother me was that for each page, they showed four pieces of art (with the occasional full page colored piece) that were kinda small on the page. There was a lot of white space around it. Solution: enlarge EACH picture and try to fill it up as much as possible.

Good Medicine!
By APF
Been a long time since I had a laughing fit. This time it was triggered by the one that has the farmer walking from the chicken coop to the house with a basket of eggs, passing a hen going the other way, carrying the farmer's baby. It all makes sense somehow...

The photo seems to indicate the books are small like normal paperback books, but the volumes are BIG (about 8" x 12" x 1" thick) and heavy. Printing is beautiful on thick-stock quality coated paper. Some comics are just a tad small compared to original, so a little extra light may be required for older readers.

If you're a Far Side fan, and you've given or lent your individual books, this complete set is awesome to get and awesome to give as a gift.

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!
By Kittye P.
Amazing set of books! These are really nice, big, and well-constructed. I've been a huge fan of Gary Larson for years, and I love having access to all of them. I definitely recommend this for Far Side fans over buying the individual books because of the commentary, extra comics, and the overall appeal of having a box set. I'll probably be buying this again as gifts for family members.

timeless stories
By LP
My daughters, ages 6 and 5, love all of these stories. We find the "old time language" endearing and the plot lines illustrating life in much simpler times are enjoyable to us all. There is a sweetness to them that I adore and the girls seem to feel the same. This book is on the list of bedtime stories every night.

Wonderful Collection of Stories
By Cari
This is a wonderful book! I've read all the stories to my daughter (6) and my son (4), and they love them. This collection of stories is sweet and fun -- simple tales of the everyday life of a little girl in an English village. Highly recommend!
