From the Publisher
A clear, concise classic particularly well-suited to courses that emphasize finding solutions to differential equations where applications play an important role. Many illustrative examples in each chapter help the student to understand the subject.

From the Back Cover
In publishing a new edition of Elementary Differential Equations, we have two main goals. First, we hope to maintain the direct style that users of earlier editions have come to expect. Secondly, in response to changes in the nature of many differential equations courses, we have added some new geometric material, reorganized some sections, and added a computer component to the text.

Organized very well
By B. VanPelt
I am teaching this course over the summer of 2004 and I find the organization of the book to be very good. I like that each of the sections covers one, and only one, topic at a time. This really allowed me to make a course that works for the summer (when time is severely limited).
The book is very straight-forward in its explanations. However, the exposition is very limited. That means the reader will have to work out a lot of the details.
As a teacher, the book works for me. I can furnish, in class, all of the details that are lacking - that's what they pay me for.
For self study, I would not recommend this book because of the lacking details. I would have to go with the great book by Tenenbaum and Pollard for those that want to self study this subject.
All in all, I really like the book's structure - each section has exactly one point to make, and then exercises to test the one topic in that section. Also, every other chapter has a collection of "miscellaneous problems" that I pull from for the tests. The miscellaneous problems are great, because I can tell my students that those are the problems I am going to use on their tests (a subset at least). That gets the students to work all of those problems (great motivation).
I would give this book 5 stars if an instructor came with the book. Otherwise, it is a good book that leaves many of the simple and intricate details to the reader.

my favourite ODEs text!
By another reader
I was stuck with Boyce/DiPrima for an ODEs course & I didn't like it, but I found this one in their bibliography & it turned out to be much better. I think there ARE enough examples to make things clear, and lots & lots of problems to work through. Also, it doesn't make a difference to me whether there's a solutions manual or if it has mistakes because I never use one; I just plug the solutions into the equation & see of they work. (I guess if there are mistakes, they should be fixed though)

Elementary Differential Equations
By Sweetcheeks McMuffin
[..]Let me warn all potential customers that this book is all about quantity of material instead of quality. While the book does cover such advanced topics as Fourier Analysis and intro to Partial Differential Equations, the book lacks sufficient examples about what is being said (a number of sections have no examples at all).
I did find the most well-written sections to be the application of second-order differential equations (applied to spring oscillations etc.) However, as far as getting a bang for your buck, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Morris Tennenbaum and Harry Polland's Ordinary Differential Equations Dover edition (cheaper, and MUCH MORE effective. Trust me).

Not for beginers.
By Amazon Customer
This book loses 1 star just by not having a hyper linked table of contents. You have to page through the book to get to the recipe that you want.

The author makes a good sell on just why commercial soaps are harmful to you and the environment. Then she completely misses explaining the benefits of various ingredients such as teatree oil (antiviral, antibiotic and antifungal). I know that different oils have different benefits from other books about natural cosmetics. Sarah Brooks doesn't mention any of them.

Some of the terms she uses in recipes are never explained "Stir continuously until you get medium trace." ???? But, she explains how to zero out a scale just about every time something gets measured.

She also tells you to prepare your mold by lining it with freezer paper. This step is mentioned in the section on necessary equipment, and is never explained again. She never mentions what preparation would be needed if you wanted to use an mold for individual bars of soap instead of cutting apart a slab.

By Amazon Customer
This book has wrong and misleading information with incomplete directions. It is definitely not for beginners. It appears the author did a little Internet research on soap making and decided to write a book on the subject. I have my doubts as to whether the author has even made a bar soap.

Fabulous Author--its really 3.5 stars
By Its okay.you'll see
First, anything by this author is great. My concern with him is he is divorced from a happy ending so I feel emotionally battered after reading his books. Its an experience and there has been growth but its isnt a feel good experience.

This was the last book of a trilogy. The first two books were devastastingly good. This was not as good as the first two. The beginning of this book expounds on the conclusion of the last book beautifully. Book 3 goes into detail on what happened to the characters at the end of book 2.

It wrapped up the the ending of the 2nd book of the trilogy which was extremely thrilling. After the beginning of book 3, the thrilling parts ended. Its not bad, just not as gripping or the pacing of the other novels. Still this is a great author, but of the trilogy, this is the weakest of the 3 books.

Definitely read the book just to find out what on the full extent of what happened after book 2.

Reading war, reading human.
By PamRL
I would never voluntarily read a book about war. And I freely admit my beliefs that violence and war are only the senseless tools of the senseless has been formed far too glibly, and far too distant from their reality. Through the eyes, the heart, the lives of all the characters in this novel and the whole trilogy my beliefs have been fortified and tears have been shed.
The hardcore realness of this narrative that takes place in World War One is so powerful that this reader felt the force of war; brought to that place by such compelling characters that a human connection was unavoidable. I do not think that I have ever had so much admiration for any such as these: with all their conflicts, strengths, weaknesses, heart, and amazing journeys.
Read the trilogy, you will never regret it.

"Had" to buy
By Michal L. Jones
This is the last book in a trilogy by Bryce Courtenay. I was introduced to the author by a friend who gave me the audio book for the second of the series "Tomo and Hawk". I was so taken by the story I searched for other books by Mr. Courtenay and ordered the frist in the series "The Patato Factory" and needed to find out "what happened" to the family. Great book, great story and so much historical accuracy that as a history lesson of the later 19th early 20th century you learn so much. Highly recommend the entire serires, although each book can "stand alone".

A Man Without Words, by Susan Schaller

The inspiring, poignant story of a deaf man who learns language for the first time at the age of 27--written by the remarkable woman who was his teacher. In a story reminiscent of Anne Sullivan and Helen Keller, here is the moving account of Schaller's work and her student's thrilling discovery of the world of words.

From Publishers Weekly
Teacher Schaller's astonishing case history of a deaf, languageless adult student touches on linguistic, philosophic and educational matters.
Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
YA-- Schaller was neither a teacher of the deaf nor a linguist, but she had learned American Sign Language (ASL) and enjoyed interpreting for the deaf. Still, nothing had prepared her for Ildefonso, a languageless adult, born deaf and lacking instruction in even the simplest communication. With infinite patience and determination, Schaller taught this intense, lonely, but apparently intelligent man to grasp not just signs, but ideas and words. Their breakthrough to language is most spectacular, reminiscent of Keller's experience with "water." Schaller's frustrations were similar to Ildefonso's as she struggled to bring language to him; they were equals as they achieved the impossible. YAs will relate to this appealing story, full of care, concern, and curiosity as it taps basic emotions regarding "words" that people share, especially while overcoming handicaps. --Mary T. Gerrity, Queen Anne School, Upper Marlboro, MD
Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
"What would life be like," wonders Oliver Sacks in his foreword to this intriguing story, "for a languageless man," a human being "deprived of what all the rest of us take for granted, deprived of the essentially human birthright of language?" When she took a temporary job as an interpreter for the deaf for a southern California community college class, Schaller met such a person. "Ildefonso" (as she calls him here)--27 years old, bright, deaf, and an illegal alien from Mexico--had never been exposed to proper sign language and was unaware of the myriad possibilities of language. The story of how Schaller patiently and painstakingly worked with him to bring him to the point of grasping, for the first time, the meaning of a sign and of recognizing a single signed word is truly inspiring. Recommended for most library collections.

By K. L Sadler
I've read many of the previous case studies of languagelessness in children. We studied Genie and the Wild Boy of Aveyron in an education class on language and it's place in education. This was my introduction to this particular group of disenfranchised, neglected, and abused people...except I thought it was all children usually discovered in late childhood (around age 13). From my neuroscience classes I remember being taught that the brain continues neuronal growth (to targeted synapses in the brain) until about age ten, then begins to cut back. This was supposedly an explanation for why language learning is so difficult later in life. So coming across this book, with its story concerning adults with no obvious psychiatric problems (just a physical difference in lacking hearing) who had managed to survive to adulthood with no language, came as a complete surprise.
This book got put aside as I had to read other books for school and work, but I picked it up again and finished it. Schaller basically is providing a qualitative study, a case study, to draw attention to this apparent problem. This method of educational research is used more and more in writing dissertations, and I actually didn't recognize what it was until I took a qualitative research class myself. The writing and book tend at first to repeat itself. I am not sure what Schaller was doing in writing this way. Perhaps the book had to be a certain length or she felt readers might not pay attention to the seriousness of this problem for Ildefonso and other adults without language. This repetition caused the first half of the book to drag a bit.
After I picked the book up again, I finished it in two days. The addition of the search for other adults with no primary language, Schaller's introduction to other adults like Ildefonso, and then her search for Ildefonso really added to the pace of the case study.
This book throws a bit of a wrench in much of the things I have been taught in both neuroscience and education. There are a few things the book illustrates better than any other book I've read on this topic. First, given the amount of adults who were deaf and had no language that Schaller found in Southern California really illustrates this has to be a major problem internationally. If we are finding such a large group in our nation which pushes education and literacy, what about in countries such as China where there are many deaf (due to overuse of gentamycin) and there are many people with no access to education. Second, again, we obviously don't know everything there is to know about the pliability of the brain. Third, I am very concerned about discrimination against this group, and the possibilities that there are many of these people in psychiatric wards or prisons or other institutions, merely because they have no way to assert their rights. This possibility would be criminal.
I'd like to see more books by Schaller on this topic, and hope to learn more about this in the future. For the most part, this is a great book, and it definitely is a great story which needed to be told.

Everyone including teachers and specialists could benefit from reading this book and learning more about a diverse population such as deafness. It shared how in poor countries when a deaf person can not access the proper education and help for his/her issue, the person grows up with the facilities to communicate with anyone. Very sad existence. With her perseverance as a teacher, she changed the man's life and opened up new opportunities/

New Perspective
By Amazon Customer
I had heard about this book on Radio Lab and it was a topic that intrigued me so I had to pick it up. It revealed a deeper understanding of the cultural world of the deaf community. There is rarely a week I don't think about this story. Though I often wanted to know more then the author provided I was always hungry for more as I read. My family was also intrigued by the story and often kept them up to date on the progress. With one reader it truly effected an entire family. Definitely recommended!

From Library Journal
These eye-popping volumes, which omit the glossaries but otherwise update and expand to twice the size the marvelous single-volume 1994 edition (LJ 1/95), give general audiences over 160 articles on pop, folk, and non-Western classical musical traditions from nearly every country in the world and many borderless ethnic groups or national musical subdivisions. (Jazz and much of U.S. commercially popular music are not included.) The articles, written in British English by more than 100 contributors and delivered with opinionated snap and multicultural spice, provide historical background, cultural context, interviews with musicians, quotations from lyrics, discographies (including CDs, some highlighted for "first purchase"; cassette tapes; and a few vinyl discs), and black-and-white photos of selected musicians. Each volume includes information on contributors (a mix of scholars, journalists, producers, and fans), a directory of record labels and shops, ads for recordings and magazines, and many references to web sites. Highly recommended for public libraries and for any music library as a guide to recorded sound collection building.ABonnie Jo Dopp, Univ. of Maryland Libs., College Park

GREAT reference guide to world music
By LRS
These Rough Guide volumes are the only truly comprehensive World Music Guides I have seen - full of specific lists of album and song titles to go in search of. While I don't always agree with the writers' taste or recommended recordings, there is no doubt that these World Music volumes are an invaluable reference in the field. Music lovers unfamiliar with world music will feel that the have suddenly happened upon a treasure chest of gold that opens up a whole new world... These volumes serve as an excellent discovery guide for approaching and buying the music of less commercial regions of the globe - however, for this reason, some recordings are not available on Amazon. Readers in large cities may have easier access to recordings via their public library or musicians passing through in concert. Depending on the artist, Youtube can sometimes be of help. As I love African music, this was my favorite volume of all. Enjoy!

Bigger and better!
By Paul A. Baker
The Rough Guides--the CDs and the books--offer spectacular resources for anyone interested in international music. This is the first volume in a projected 3-volume set that will replace the current two-volume edition. The material on Africa and the Middle East present about 50% more material than before, and include suggested "playlists" in addition to the biographical and discographical information included in the previous edition. As a radio programmer I find the Rough Guides quite useful.

David Copperfield (Macmillan Collector's Library Book 53), by Charles Dickens

In one of his most energetic and enjoyable novels, Charles Dickens tells the life story of David Copperfield, from his birth in Suffolk, through the various struggles of his childhood, to his successful career as a novelist. The early scenes are particularly masterful, depicting the world as seen from the perspective of a fatherless small boy, whose idyllic life with his mother is ruined when she marries again, this time to a domineering and cruel man. David Copperfield is partly modelled on Dickens' own experiences, and one of the great joys of the book lies in its outlandish cast of characters, which includes the glamorous Steerforth, the cheerful, verbose Mr Micawber, the villainous Uriah Heep, and David's eccentric aunt, Betsey Trotwood. Dickens described it as his 'favourite child' among his novels and it is easy to see why.

This Macmillan Collector's Library edition of David Copperfield features original illustrations by H. K. Browne 'Phiz', with an afterword by Sam Gilpin.

Designed to appeal to the booklover, the Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of beautiful gift editions of much loved classic titles. Macmillan Collector's Library are books to love and treasure.

Beautiful but fragile.
By Brian in Utah
If you need a recommendation for the story here it is: read this book. It is a wonderful exploration of relationships with character's you'll love and feel like you know personally. Five stars for this engaging masterpiece.

But, chances are, you are more interested in this particular edition. It is beautiful but fragile. A barcode sticker placed on the back removed some of the paint/dye/coloring on the back--not what you want when you are looking to purchase a nice copy of a book for your library. Not sure how it will hold up over time but the indication is that it won't be very good--at least not the images on the cover.

As an additional piece of information, this edition includes illustrations.

WINNER OF THE 2015 EDGAR AWARD FOR BEST NOVEL
In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands.

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the “perk” and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

Brady Hartsfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady’s next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands.

Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

From Booklist
King’s interest in crime fiction was evident from his work for the Hard Case Crime imprint—The Colorado Kid (2005) and Joyland (2013)—but this is the most straight-up mystery-thriller of his career. Retired Detective Bill Hodges is overweight, directionless, and toying with the idea of ending it all when he receives a jeering letter from the Mercedes Killer, who ran down 23 people with a stolen car but evaded Hodges’ capture. With the help of a 17-year-old neighbor and one victim’s sister (who, in proper gumshoe style, Hodges quickly beds), Hodges begins to play cat-and-mouse with the killer through a chat site called Under Debbie’s Blue Umbrella. Hodges’ POV alternates with that of the troubled murderer, a Norman Bates–like ice-cream-truck driver named Brady Hartfield. Both Hodges and Hartfield make mistakes, big ones, leaving this a compelling, small-scale slugfest that plays out in cheery suburban settings. This exists outside of the usual Kingverse (Pennywise the Clown is referred to as fictive); add that to the atypical present-tense prose, and this feels pretty darn fresh. Big, smashing climax, too. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: No need to rev the engine here; this baby will rocket itself out of libraries with a loud squeal of the tires. --Daniel Kraus

Review
"Pays off exuberantly . . . Surprising and invigorating." (The New York Times)

"Classic Stephen King. Creepy, yet realistic characters that get under your skin and stay there, a compelling story that twists and turns at breakneck speed, and delightful prose that, once again, proves that one of America’s greatest natural storytellers is also one of its finest writers." (Associated Press)

"On one level, Mr. Mercedes is an expertly crafted example of the classic race-against-the-clock thriller. On another, it is a novel of depth and character enriched throughout by the grace notes King provides in such seemingly effortless profusion. It is a rich, resonant, exceptionally readable accomplishment by a man who can write in whatever genre he chooses." (Washington Post)

“Think of Mr. Mercedes as an AC/DC song: uncluttered, chugging with momentum, and a lot harder to pull off than it looks. . . . King has written a hot rod of a novel, perfect for a few summer days at the pool. Mercedes-Benz commands drivers to demand ‘the best or nothing.’ In pop-fiction terms, that motto still applies to Stephen King, too. With apologies to AC/DC, the highway to hell never felt so fun.” (Christian Science Monitor)

“A taut, suspenseful race-against-time book . . . [King is] in reliably fine form.” (The New York Times)

"A taut, calibrated thriller . . . The majority of the book is merciless and unforgiving, and the scariest thing about it is how plausible the whole scenario is." (Miami Herald)

“The nerve-shredding denouement is vintage King—a pulse-pounding race against time . . .” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

“A full-throttle sprint to the finish; the last 80 pages cannot be doled out over multiple reading sessions. You'll have to swallow them all in a single gulp.” (Sarasota Herald Tribune)

“A literary Van de Graaff generator: tightly paced and parsed with dynamic dialogue and traumatic twists.” (Columbus Dispatch)

“An oh-so-dark mystery that never shuts the door on love, loss and, possibly, redemption.” (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

“No one can create a villain quite like King. . . . [A]ll the elements come together in a very public, potentially explosive finale (with a surprising post script). King fans may find themselves furiously turning pages long into the night.” (Seattle Times)

“Along book that doesn’t feel like one. King’s pacing is perfect here . . . [Y]ou should read Mr. Mercedes. You’ll be checking your automobile’s back seat for months, if not years.” (BookReporter.com)

“A fast-paced whodunit.” (Esquire)

“King excels in his disturbing portrait of Brady, a genuine monster in ordinary human form who gives new meaning to the phrase‘the banality of evil.” (Publisher's Weekly)

“The most straight-up mystery-thriller of [King’s] career…Pretty darn fresh.” (Booklist)

“Nicely dark, never predictable and altogether entertaining.” (Kirkus)

“King deftly takes elements of hard-boiled mysteries and puts a fresh spin on them.” (USA Today)

“A showdown between good and evil that characterizes the best of King's work, regardless of genre.” (Los Angeles Times)

“King may have left out the supernatural in Mr. Mercedes, but his gifts for creating thoroughly believable characters and thrumming suspense are in full play. He keeps raising the stakes and ratcheting up the violence, and just when you think everything is settled there's one spine-icing little turn on the very last page.” (Tampa Bay Times)

“King creates such vivid characters—people you can picture yourself drinking a beer with or inviting over for lunch. So when he puts them in great peril, and that includes Jerome’s family and pet dog and the Mercedes’ owner’s family, it’s a race against time . . .” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

“Hartfield is sensitive, sympathetic and one of King’s most realistic characters. He is a lot like Norman Bates from Psycho, in the worst ways imaginable. You can add Hartfield to the list of great King villains, alongside the shape-shifting monster Pennywise from It and the hypnotic vampire Kurt Barlow from Salem’s Lot.” (Boston Herald)

“A fast-paced cat-and-mouse game between Hodges, the motley group of unlikely heroes that he assembles, and the Mercedes Killer.” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

“As always, Stephen King draws very real people and scenes straight out of life as we know it . . .” (Raleigh News & Observer)

“A trimmer-than-usual King, but that doesn't mean he skimps on the suspense and spine-tingling chills.” (People Magazine)

“With Mr.Mercedes, [King] demonstrates that he can still rock a pure genre novel like nobody’s business. . . . a thrilling example of King’s boundless imagination.” (Bookpage)

“A war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.” (Cemetery Dance)

“. . . barrels toward a memorable conclusion. King’s work has almost always gotten lost in translation on the big screen, but his tense, propulsive, ultra-fast-paced climax here seems like it was written with the movie in mind.” (Onion AV Club)

a constant reader

If you want aliens, cats that come back or creepy clowns, this is not the book for you. If you love well written King storys, it is. If you enjoyed Shawshank and Stand by Me ect., this book will make you happy. 11/22/63 was good, but still used the supernatural to move the story, here it's just people. I think King is at his best when he uses the characters that always feel real.

Enjoy a good story? Tired of the usual crap? Read this.

Stephen King Never Fails to Evolve & Amaze!
By Mathlete
I love this new and improved Stephen King 2.0. I am not going to rehash the publisher's summary or go too deep into the plot as some consider writing about ANY plot points as spoilers. There are no spoilers here, just my opinion of the type of readers that would enjoy Mr. Mercedes as much as I did.

In my opinion, there are three major buckets of Stephen King fans,

A) Readers that love his earlier works that featured densely written supernatural stories that kindled the type of mental terrorism that innovated the genre. Novels that are deep in character and plot line development to the point they easily reach the level of an 800+ page epic. (See: The Stand)

B) Readers that love his lighter works that loan themselves to the psychological thrillers of the physical and mortal world that are so terrorizing, they wish it was due to a supernatural entity. Novels that don't have as much depth (relatively speaking) or number of characters, but still great reads. (See: Misery)

C) Readers who just enjoy to be entertained and terrorized by the master of horror, regardless of the believability of the plot's premise or source of the fear.

For the hardcore fans that reside in segment A, I think they will feel Mr. Mercedes is a well written novel, but a rare miss by the author they have grown to love. That would be an unfortunate mis-characterization if readers think Mr. Mercedes is a miss due to the lack of page turning details developing voluminous characters and minuscule details of their surroundings. The development of the main characters in Mr. Mercedes was more that enough to keep us engaged and on our toes with a truly unpredictable plot.

Protagonist Bill Hodges is definitely not a sympathetic character nor a character that can be simply introduced to the reader. We are taken through his very tough existence to see him as a loathing underdog and the city's only hope to stop the sadistic plans of the antagonist, Brady Hartsfield. Also, King does a great job still making use and giving depth to the small supporting cast which includes Hodges sidekick, Jermome, Brady's mother Deborah, and Jannelle Patterson - the sister of the woman whose Mercedes was used by Brady in the attack that starts it all.

Fans in segments B and C will definitely feel the same heart-racing thrill that they have come to know from Stephen King. Mr. Mercedes is totally unpredictable, fast starting, and interlaced with many newer 21st century references that many will find refreshing. Mr. Mercedes lends more to a thriller where a lot of the plot plays out through the web - a new twist that makes me love Stephen King 2.0 even more.

This was a great novel that is much easier to read than many of Stephen King's earlier works. It will definitely not be a disappointment for fans who are open to Kin's expanding range of finding new, and more 21st century ways to keep us horrified, entertained, and guessing. I definitely recommend this to all King fans and those who may be new to his books.

Excellent!

King negates a heavy hand for an authentic, subtly crafted story. Mr. Mercedes offers dual perspective, enabling a more interesting plot development for King's group of unlikely heroes. A fascinating adventure!
