Don't buy this book

Unless you want to learn wrong concepts don't buy this book. Spent money on this and now after finding so many errors I stop trusting this book completely. And the errors are found even in very basic concepts like Kurtosis, CI for Chi-Square distributions. If you want to prepare for FRM exams go with Kaplan Schweser or Bionic Turtle. At least there you will be able to learn the correct concepts.

Diana Palmer ventures into Betty Neels' territory with a hit

Ms. Palmer usually writes about cowboys, millionaires, or private investigators. This time she ventures into the medical field, giving an edge to the type of book that Betty Neels is famous for. And, as usual, she scores a bulls-eye! Although a failure to communicate is behind the misunderstanding between the heroine and hero, it is well-thought out. If I were accused of being responsible for another's death for two long years, I wouldn't be inclined to try once again to tell the truth. Palmer's heroine is broken, both in spirit and body. Her hero must heal himself before he can heal her. Lovely and engrossing, I stayed up all night to finish this book!

Loved the doctor!

Plain and simple, I really enjoyed this book! Having also just received a letter from Ms. Palmer(aka Susan Kyle), I was 'patiently' anticipating her newest release! It was so pleasing to read a slightly different style than she usually writes! The hero is reluctant to reveal his deepest emotions toward his 'Patient Nurse', even to himself! I felt some frustration toward his nurse, as far as clearing her reputation was concerned. On the whole, this is a great read! I couldn't put it down, and would recommend it to anyone who was 'trying' Diana Palmer's work for the first time!

About the Author

Dr. Darren R. Hayes is a leading expert in the field of digital forensics and computer security. He is the director of cybersecurity and an assistant professor at Pace University, and he has been named one of the Top 10 Computer Forensics Professors by Forensics Colleges.

 

Hayes has served on the board of the High Technology Crime Investigation Association (HTCIA), Northeast Chapter, and is the former president of that chapter. He also established a student chapter of the HTCIA at Pace University.

 

During his time at Pace University, Hayes developed a computer forensics track for the school’s bachelor of science in information technology degree. He also created a computer forensics research laboratory, where he devotes most of his time to working with a team of students in computer forensics and, most recently, the burgeoning field of mobile forensics. As part of his research and promotion of this scientific field of study, he has fostered relationships with the NYPD, N.Y. State Police, and other law enforcement agencies. He also organized a successful internship program at the cybercrime division of the New York County D.A. Office and the Westchester County D.A. Office.

 

Hayes is not only an academic, however—he is also a practitioner. He has been an investigator on both civil and criminal investigations and has been called upon as an expert for a number of law firms. In New York City, Hayes has been working with six to eight public high schools to develop a curriculum in computer forensics. He collaborates on computer forensics projects internationally and has served as an extern examiner for the MSc in Forensic Computing and Cybercrime Investigation degree program at University College Dublin for four years.

 

Hayes has appeared on Bloomberg Television and Fox 5 News and been quoted by Associated Press, CNN, Compliance Week, E-Commerce Times, The Guardian (UK), Investor’s Business Daily, MarketWatch, Newsweek, Network World, Silicon Valley Business Journal, USA Today, Washington Post, and Wired News. His op-eds have been published by American Banker’s BankThink and The Hill’s Congress Blog. In addition, he has authored a number of peer-reviewed articles in computer forensics, most of which have been published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Hayes has been both an author and reviewer for Pearson Prentice Hall since 2007.

" exercises in the book - making this book useless: ( I will update my critics here if ...

This is surely a very interesting book but it seems I bought it to early. There is lot of digital content needed for the book, the book tells you to register it and download the content by "Click on the 'Access Bonus Content' link". However there is no such link. I have other books registered at PearsonITcertification, and some of them have that link, but not Computer Forensics Investigation. Without being able to download the digital content you are not able to do all the "Let's get Practical!" exercises in the book - making this book useless :(

Technical Book Written Like a Great Mystery Novel

Whenever I look at buying a book I look at the price of the book after I have flipped through a few pages. I want to know if the object I’m interested in is worth the cost associated with it. Money doesn’t grow on trees but books are made of trees so the riddle goes around and around in my head. I need to know if that $65.00 book is going to bring a me return on investment somehow. Will buying that book make me a better professional or will it bring me enough enjoyment to warrant spending that amount of money? In the case of A practical Guide to Computer Forensic Investigations written by Dr. Darren R. Hayes, the answer is at the end of my review.

When I get a technical book I usually read a few pages throughout, bouncing around from chapter to chapter to get a feel for the book and how it was designed before I settle in to read the entire manual. Dr. Hayes didn’t give me that opportunity because the first pages drew me in almost like a mystery novel. I couldn’t put the darn thing down. The only reason I noticed this was because I coughed and saw the time on the clock. I was on page 139 and my highlighter was worn out.

Somehow the author managed to entice me with page after page of incredible information that I failed to adhere to my normal reading ritual of bouncing around. And I didn’t even notice until I was on page 139. In that space of time, I switched out highlighters because my orange one dried up with over usage and I lost four hours of sleep. For example, during the Enron Oil scandal of 2001 the employees there shredded thousands of pages of documents but FBI forensic investigators were able to retrieve the equivalent to 10 times the size of the U.S. Library of Congress from hard drives. That’s a whole lot of data recovery.

Here’s another tidbit: Microsoft’s COFEE program only works properly if the system is captured live and hasn’t been powered down. This book goes into a large segment of live resident memory data recovery, all written in vivid detail by Dr. Hayes. Did you know that Bitlocker only activates when the device is shut down or the Bitlocker USB drive is removed? That’s how the FBI was able to capture all that data from the recent Silk Road operator. The suspect was at a restaurant with his back to the door when federal agents swept in from behind and grabbed him and his laptop before he knew what happened. His computer was fully logged on and his encryption unlocked.

A Practical Guide to Computer Forensic Investigations goes into some of the basics of forensic investigation, as you might expect, but then dives into registry analysis, hard drive composition, file indexing, email event archives and pages after page of incredible information. Dr. Hayes writes long and in-depth about the differences between each version of Windows. He covers how each File Allocation Table (FAT) is different and what the examiner needs to consider based on the OS and update. While this topic alone could easily take up an entire book, Dr. Hayes manages to blanket Linux, and iOS too.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Practical Guide to Computer Forensic Investigations also discusses the differences between media formats and how you need to consider your connections for evidence gathering. Many other forensic books cover this same topic but none do as good of a job as this author does. Wait until you see Dr. Hayes idea of a computer tool kit, besides including a soldering iron and wrenches, I could almost swear I saw a blow torch and a surgical knife. He doesn’t mess around. What kind of doctor is this guy?

Most of the software tools mentioned in the book are your typical commercial deep-lined pocket tools. For those of us without fat wallets, the good doctor adds plenty of free or open source tools that do the same thing as the expensive ones. In fact, many of the free tools work better. Dr. Hayes is very serious when he points out that you need to have you own set of tools and know those tools well. You need to know how your tools work before you have to use them in real cases. This may sound like common sense but you don’t want to be called out by a legal team as a sworn expert witness only to have them make you look like an idiot because you didn’t add the –d switch when you ran your acquisition tool.

Be aware that some of the information is a bit disturbing because the author made sure to include plenty of real life examples of crimes. Child exploitation, murder and physical harm are cases that have the reader reminded that this isn’t a hobby. The guilt or innocence of someone may rest on your shoulders as an investigator. Dr. Hayes brings up the team concept of working alongside other professionals who are building that case with you. It is your responsibility to conduct your portion of the investigation with as much knowledge as you can offer. This book is a huge part of your knowledge base.

Many new devices are part of the evidence collection process. This guide doesn’t linger on just desktop or laptop machines. There is 501 pages of content that ranges from cellular signal interception, SIM card reading, different tablet operating systems, Android forensics, iPhone data analysis, RIM data acquisition, photo researching, Bluetooth data storage locations and everything in-between. These aren’t merely mentioned as part of a paragraph, they are written about with extensive background information.

This guide meets my criteria for a desk top reference book. I don’t have much space on my desk so space is at a premium. I don’t even have room for speakers so I manage (if you want to call it that) my little space based on how often I use a particular object. For books, I only have three books that have made it to a permanent spot on my desk. The other hundreds of books I have are stashed in the book cases above my desk, daring to collapse at any moment. A Practical Guide to Computer Forensic Investigations has earned a coveted spot on my desk. This means I have to get rid of my computer or move another hard drive to the attic. Some people give awards for great books, I give room for great books.

So to answer the question of whether the book is worth the price, my answer is no, it is worth twice that amount.

Computer Forensics Investigations covers many different specialty areas including legal, documentation and technical procedures which need to be accurately followed in order to achieve a successful investigation. This book is an excellent source which covers many if not all of these key areas. It should be part of every Computer Forensic student's book collection as well as in Computer Forensic Labs. The non-working link only reflects one "Let's Get Practical" exercise which DOES NOT make the book useless. This seems to be a publisher oversight which I'm sure will get corrected soon. Don't let this stop you from getting this book. Even if that link never work at all, the book is still a must have in my opinion.

A little disappointed...

I bought this book to improve my VBA for Excel skills for a specific work-related project. Bill Jelen knows the most efficient means to write VBA for Excel...no argument there...and there's a lot of sample code, plus video as well...but I never hit that point where I got excited with my progress like I do with many of the other tech books. To be fair I think VBA for Excel is challenging for any author to teach and truly reach people. I was a bit disappointed with this read...so I ended up leaning on a book by John Walkenbach...Excel 2013 Power Programming with VBA. I found this book to be more helpful for me in understanding VBA syntax.

You won't find a more advanced book out there. There are books as good as this one, but this is for expert level users only while the others will be useful for intermediate or beginners.

There is a lot of good stuff on the web but this brings together a lot valuable examples that you do not need to hunt for

A fine book on advanced Excel topics

I wish I'd found this book sooner. It is very clearly and authoritatively written about various advanced topics. There is a thorough discussion of the "Advanced Filter" feature and also of user forms. Examples were carefully selected to illustrate various features without using an excessive amount of data to clutter things. However, just from the title, it should be expected that this book is not intended for those with little or no prior knowledge of spreadsheets and Excel. This book has been more useful to me than one with "Bible" in its title.

the ejb book - full of practical examples

"EJB 3 in Action" manages to be an excellent read for both people new to EJB and people who have been using EJB 2.X. There are side notes throughout about significant changes from EJB 2.X. For larger topics that someone new to EJB 2.X might not know, the topic is covered in the appendix. The examples are interesting and well written, so it isn't boring reading about the purpose of a session bean if you already know it.

What really impressed me were the differences between this book and Sun's J2EE tutorial. The majority of examples used Java 5 syntax (for looping and the like.) This made the examples feel like EJB 3 examples rather than an old book robotically updated. Further, the authors explain when to use a deployment descriptor vs annotations. Sun sticks to the party line and barely mentions the deployment descriptor. The "EJB 3 in Action" approach is much more useful for gaining practical advice.

Best practices are described throughout. The authors don't assume you know Java 5 features and explain them as necessary. All the expected topics are covered. Additionally, there are chapters on Spring integration and migrating from EJB 2.X. The examples are app server agnostic, but they show you how to use one in the appendix. Finally, the appendixes provide an excellent reference for both the annotations and deployment descriptor.

Convincing introduction to EJB3

As many of you, I was and am very skeptical about EJBs. They have complicated the enterprise world and haven't really delivered on their promise. Now there is EJB3. When starting the book, I just had one question: Did they "fixed it". After reading this very convincing book, my tentative answer would be: Yes.

"EJB3 in Action" is an easy to read and easy to understand introduction to EJB3. The book doesn't require you to know too much other topics and starts from the beginning. It starts with giving an overview of everything and then from there moves into the different bean types. From there it'll just in the more advanced topics.

One of the things I really liked about the book is that it really tries to answer the questions which I think much of the readers have. Questions like: Why would I use EJB3, I just stopped using EJBs. Can I combine EJBs with spring and how? These are exactly the type of questions people will want answered.

I'm not a EJB expert at all. However, I found the book easy to read and enjoyable. I've learned a lot from the authors while reading the book. I'd recommend it for everyone who wants to know more about EJB3. Great job!

Everything you ever wanted to know about EJB3

Having struggled with the complexities and problems of EJB 1 and 2 (most java programmers I talked to doing large EJB projects, for example, stay clear from using entity beans), I was really drawn to the advantages of EJB3 as described in the first chapter of "EJB3 in Action". The book's next 2 chapters, in keeping true to the title of the book, provide a whirlwind tour that shows EJB3 in action. I soon became an evangelist for EJB3 recommending it to my work colleagues where we subsequently upgraded to WebLogic 10 with plans to upgrade our java projects from EJB2 to EJB3.

The book is well written and presents an in-depth and thorough discussion of the EJB3 architecture. Of special note is the fact that all java beans in EJB3 are written as POJO's and defined in terms of annotations. I only wish there were a few chapters on how to effectively leverage JUnit (vs. Cactus) to make unit testing easier.

A fair share of the book is devoted to lucidly describing the persistence API and corresponding concepts dealing with object relational mapping that have promised to address and minimize the complexities and performance issues that have discouraged many a java programmer from tackling the entity beans of EJB2/3.

The book also deals with practical issues such as packaging your EJB3 applications, performance tuning, upgrading from EJB2 to EJB3 and exposing EJBs as web services. There is even a chapter devoted to using EJB3 with the Spring framework.

There are plenty of source code examples in the book which you can download online, tailored for Sun's Glassfish application server, as well as those from Oracle and JBoss.

I recommend this book highly for anyone who is considering moving up to EJB3 and wanting a clear, concise and well written book on the topic.

Good tips

Here are some of the types of monsters that this book covers: cult classic monsters, Robotic monsters, aliens, Godzilla-styles monsters, humanoid monsters, plant monsters, and sea monters. This book covers basic tips, such as the box form to use and there are lots of examples. In the beginning, the tutorial on drawing cult classic monsters were really good. I like that part the best. The authors start off using basic body forms and guiding you through the steps. But as we turn to the later part of the book, the steps are truncated and the authors merely point out the sketches.
The main reason for knocking one point off the rating is because this is NOT for beginners. People who are considering this book should have a good feel for drawing shapes and anatomy. This book also assume you know the workings on perspective and shading, as well as how to detail and adding effects.
The drawings are from the studio of Antartic Press, which also produce such comics as "Gold Diggers," "Warrior Nun Areala" and the "How to Draw Manga" series. The artists present a mostly Manga and Japanese Anime feel to it. Inspiring artists who wanted to get a glimpse at AP's studio style should consider this book.

Great book, great for kids wanting to draw. I agree with everything from the above review.

I do want to mention that this is a black and white book, no final colored illustration like MOST drawing books. I really wanted to see what the colored pictures look like that's why I took off a point b/c the illustrations are fantastic and inspiring.
