Small Book - With a Lot of Information

I have to admit that I am a big fan of Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen. They have changed the way many Americans look at health and the major causes of diseases. While most of the medical community is focused on fixing existing problems with drugs and surgery, they are so much into prevention.

One of the underlying causes of so many problems is related to what we eat (and how much). This is a condensed version of their previous book, "YOU: On a Diet". It is just over 100 pages and features 99 of their best ideas of keeping the weight off.

One of the great things about this book is that it covers almost every part of eating and weight issues, including lifestyle, exercise and the important role of your mind and eating.

If you have read their previous books, you may be tempted to skip this. Instead, you may find it to be a great reminder. I have gotten into the habit of reading one of the short tips every day and focus on making it a habit. I've found that reading a book once usually means I retain about 10% of the information.

Sections 47 - 63 actually consist of a 20 minute workout. There are recipes spread throughout the book as well, with a 14 day diet plan at the end.

If you skipped their other books because they were a bit big, this may be perfect for you. It is an easy to read book with straight-to-the-point information without the excess verbiage. Admittedly, some of the information is obvious, but we all need to be reminded. It would make a great companion to more feeling-oriented books.

Bottom Line: This is a concise book of usable information without all of the fluff. It is written by medical doctors, not writers. This style will probably not appeal to everyone. If you like basic information, you probably will like this. If you enjoy more feeling oriented books, you might want to check out Geneen Roth's books, or Marianne Williamson's "A Course in Weight Loss".

Some Decent Info Hidden In Horrible Puns and Jokes

This book has some very basic knowledge about the human body in it. It doesn't exceed fourth grade in its information and hardly surpasses third grade in its comedy.
It got to the point that as I read, I numbered the puns and distracting tangents that the author used. There were points that it was 8 or 9 to a page...really ridiculous when you factor in the large font and irritating illustrations.
If you really want to learn about your body I suggest getting a proper biology book or even watching some specials on television (NOT DOC OZ!!!) about disease and illness. There are so many great resources--this should be a last option.
This was required for a college class. Yes, a COLLEGE CLASS at a state university. We will be discussing the value of this as a course textbook at the end of the semester. Our class is in consensus here--this book stinks!

Excellent Informative Manual for the Average Person

I've had this book for a few years now. If you took anatomy classes in college, had a couple of biology courses, have been reading up on nutrition for years, and are a physical trainer, you may find the book too simple for the information you're wanting. But this book is great at explaining in ordinary words to the average person how the body works and what we should do, or not do, to maintain it like you maintain a car. It's a little light on the exercise parts, but that's because it's an allover body book and just gives you the basics for maintaining optimum health. So you get just the basics and minimum of exercise you need, and it provides those exercises. It's written with humor and plenty of illustrations, serious and humorous. Even though some sections were a little simplistic for me, I still found the explanations and illustrations interesting, informative, and humorous. Don't let the fact that the two doctors make money from writing and television. They are legit doctors. Dr. Oz is a cardiologist and still practices medicine. Dr. Oz is not associated with big pharma in any way, to my knowledge, as stated by another reviewer. Because someone is not only smart and accomplished, but also wealthy and famous, does not necessarily make him an idiot or unethical. If you are concerned with becoming healthy or maintaining good health, this is an excellent, down to earth guide for that. It won't tell you to start training for a marathon, or eat nothing but raw food. Nothing extreme here. This is a common sense manual for the average person who wants to be healthy. I highly recommend it for yourself or as a gift.
